British adventurer and endurance athlete Hannah McKeand is the fastest woman to trek to the South Pole, solo and unaided from the Antactic coast.
Hannah has now trekked to the South Pole from the Antarctic coast six times - more than anyone else in the world. A highly respected Polar Guide, Hannah continues to lead others to realise their polar ambitions in Antarctica. She also works in remote logistics and risk analysis, putting in camps and runways at remote locations such as sea-ice based emperor penguin colonies.
Hannah McKeand broke the world-record for both men and women trekking solo, unsupported to the South Pole in 2006 and she remains the fastest woman to complete this arduous journey of 690 miles. During this expedition, Hannah pulled a sledge that weighed 80kg (176lbs) at the start of her expedition from the coast of Antarctica. Despite a high fat diet including fudge and chocolate, Hannah lost 42lbs during her solo trek. Completing her polar expedition in just 39 days, 9 hours and 33 minutes, Hannah broke the world record for the fastest solo, unsupported journey.
Hannah's leadership, energy, vitality, dedication and resourcefulness are clearly evident in her South Pole success. Focus, determination, positive visualization, excellent risk assessment and a will to face adversity are vital to survive in the polar environment.
‘On Antarctica, the environment can be really ferocious but the main challenge is its vastness, its monotony and its relentlessly aggressive weather. Travelling through it is almost like a meditation exercise, trying to stay permanently in tune with it, calm and in control. It is as much a mental challenge as an extreme physical one.’
