Bering Strait Expedition 2016

Neil Laughton and James Bingham set out at the end of February to attempt a return crossing of the Bering Strait between NW Alaska and the International Date Line between the Diomede Islands, mid way to the Russian mainland.

Unfortunately, both British explorers were rescued attempting to cross the strait due to thin ice.  Neil said that after paddling for nine or ten hours, they noticed ice forming around their kayaks.  However, as night fell, they were unable to pitch a tent due to the lack of thick ice.  They found that they were being carried north towards the open ocean.  Neil said: "So it was a pretty dire situation.  You couldn't paddle, you couldn't walk."

Dee Caffari is delighted to be taking part in the BT Sport Relief Challenge: Hell on High Seas.  Dee was on the sofa to discuss the likely realities of being on board when the challenge was announced on The One Show on the BBC last night.

Alex Jones, Hal Cruttenden, Ore Obuba, Angelica Bell, Doon Mackichan and Suzy Perry are attempting to sail from Belfast around a section of the UK coast with a crew of experienced sailors including Dee.  They leave on 7 March and have just five days to complete 1000 miles to raise money for Sport Relief.

It will be cold and a steep learning curve for the celebrities on board - but what an inspiring challenge!

Alastair's new book Grand Adventures published 24 March 2016

So what’s a GRAND ADVENTURE – it is the most life-changing, career-enhancing, personality-forging, fun adventure of your life.

Following on from his popular Microadventures, in Grand Adventures Alastair Humphreys shines a spotlight on the real-life things that get in the way: stuff like time, money or your other commitments. Grand Adventures is also crammed with hard-won wisdom from people who have actually been there and done that: by boat and boot, car and kayak, bicycle and motorbike. People who had one epic trip then returned to normal life, or who got bitten so badly by the bug that they devoted their life to the pursuit of adventure. Young people, old people. Men, women. Mates, couples, families. Extraordinary, inspiring people. People like you.

Saving your pennies, overcoming inertia, generating momentum, getting out the front door: if you want it enough, you can do it.

'As an 18-year-old working on boats in the Caribbean, keen yachtsman Geoff Holt made up his mind that he would sail around the world one day.

'A short time later, a diving accident changed his life forever, leaving him paralysed from the chest down. Rather than letting the tragedy end his dream, however, Holt, 49, has spent three decades working towards finally achieving that goal.

“Being quadriplegic may limit my physical capabilities but it doesn’t moderate my aspirations,” he said. “I think a project like this is unique, it is an example of the power of the human spirit.”
